For direct sowing, always plant twice as many seeds as you actually want and then thin and even transplant if necessary. Keep the seeds moist until germination.

I planted some seeds we saved from Butternut squash a few weeks ago. I’m in Texas zone nine. I have several plants but they are all the same variety. My daughter said I will have to self pollinate. Do I need different varieties as Finula suggests to make them work?

I’m with you on direct sowing. I’ve had better luck protecting seedlings from bunnies than seeds from whatever ate them or weather. Also, I’ve never experienced problems regarding root disturbance. A couple years ago I grabbed a three pack of sunflowers on a whim, teased out 11 plants and they all grew. Lol maybe they should have been better in some way and I just didn’t know any better!

Did you say you were putting the seed starters on your heat mat or leaving them outside on the table?

Love the Bootstrap Farmer supplies. Very sturdy. I’m going to try their mesh bottom trays for this year’s soil blocks.

I see a lot of suggestions on putting up a roof on your potting area. A metal Or plastic roof would generate too much heat. If you want more shade . I would consider a shade cloth. Will help cool down the area if it gets full sun. Happy Gardening 🌻🧡

Hi janey, Dawn here watching from Corfu….I know the basil was a treat for the chicks but would also be wonderful to make pesto jarred up and stored or mix with a little olive oil keep in freezer in ice cube tray ever ready to mix into your cooking

YOU KNOW MUCH MORE THAN ME ABOUT GARDENING BUT ONE TIP I MAY HAVE FOR YOU ABOUT DIRECT SOWING ZINNIAS IS TO OVER SOW. YOU CAN ALWAYS THIN OUT. I ALWAYS HARVEST MY ZINNIA SEEDS SO I HAVE ALOT AND I SOW HEAVY. I PREFER DIRECT SOWING TO SEED STARTING BC I DONT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT FOR SEED STARTING OR THE ROOM. BUT WE EACH HAVE TO FIND WHAT WORKS BEST FOR US, RIGHT!

Yep the birds got mine too. What did work was adding burlap on top w landscaping pins. Can water through it. Was awesome 🤩

Re shelf: aren’t those nails called studs? Janey I plant my basil in half shade morning sun …..they won’t bolt as easily and small leafed basil called boxwood basil or greek basil are the best for not tbolting :)))))))) The Office sign is a~d~o~r~a~b~l~e❣️

Love a productive queen. Why don't you put some of that wavy plastic sheets they use on diy green house roofs over that frame above the potting area to help keep rain off your shelf etc? just a thought.

calls likys are normally planted in shade in warm southern california they need lots of moisture you may want to put in your side yard

You should have put it up high because onions and garlic is highly toxic to dogs and cats

I love these kinds of videos, it sure inspired me to do something outside, mainly weeding.

This year was the first year that I grew dahlias. I planted out 72 baby dahlia seedlings i had started inside the house. The next morning they were all gone. ALL GONE! I found a few of the plugs in other parts of the yard. I suspect it was pesky squirrels that took them. We also have quail to contend with. And of course, gophers. The birds like the seedlings too - I have had to plant out zinnia seeds over and over again too. I have decided to put hoops over my raised beds with sheer netting to keep them off while they sprout and grow. When the zinnias are bigger, nothing bothers them.

The office plants and now sign look fabulous! Great work space idea! I need to do that too. The bench you are working on - can you share where you got that? Looks like a great size! 🪴🪴🪴

Janey - LOVE the signs on your office - both front and back! As for bugs ‘in the country’ - have you considered planting plants throughout your landscape (instead of just in raised beds) that deter flies/mosquitos or pests (like gophers, moles, squirrels, etc)? I have lived in the country forever, and I discovered by an ‘accidental planting’ around my deck a few years ago that these things can really make a huge difference!

I love the side of your office now. So practical. But Wouldn’t the plastic pots on that shelf blow away in the wind? Maybe its a spot for just the terracottas.

Mosquitoes are the worse! The worse! And they actually haven’t even peaked yet 😬 I grew my first dahlias this year and I couldn’t get over the texture!! They are fabulous! I’m obsessed now lol

Don't give up on that basil. I have good results just pinching the flowers off above a good branching leaf set. The plant just grows more leaves and is fuller than ever!

If you don't like bug sprays, they do sell patches called nat pat mosquito patch. They are citronella infused no deet.. used a lot in Florida, have kids and adults, sold on amazon

Hi Janey! zone 9B FL here, I feel the same way. I don't like bugs spray on me too. So for me to avoid using chemical spray I planted a lot of Lemongrasses, Citronella & Lavender around my house and my garden. Just keep in mind though Lemongrass is a tropical plant so you might want to plant them in pots so that you can protect them in the winter and if you research them they have great health benefits too and it's beautiful in the garden as well.
